Denny Balish
Whale
Waking to her urgings
I stumble to the kitchen to
Retrieve her harness
Inserting right foot, then left foot
Tighten snuggly
I open the door and enter dawn
Walking with the rising light and
Sounds of joyous sniffing
An image I saw last night stirs
Of a beached whale
Dead with a belly full of plastic
A life spent too soon
Caused by careless humans
Who do not see the violence
They create with a discarded
Cup, bottle, cap
I stop to pick up poop
With a plastic bag that
I do not know
What to do with now
