Laying in Wait

Updated: Nov 23, 2019

I stand at the threshold,

My future before me,

Ripe with possibility; the kind

That dwells in the mind of the hopeful.

Behind me, the past –

Pocked with lost dreams and regret,

Speckled with fond memories

I was not to harried to embrace.

I want to scream, “No!”

To turn, clutching, back through time

For that which never was,

But could have been, if only…

Those years, dust.

I breathe, eyes closed.

It takes but one step…

To cross,

Yet I hesitate.

Knowing timid feet

Will not erase the inevitable.

I strip off that which no longer serves –

Down to my skivvies,

Vulnerable, open,

Near-naked before my destiny.

If I dare to laugh fear in the face,

I will brave, heart open,

Into the sacred mystery of life

And know, that which I desire,

Has always been nearby,

Laying in wait.
